Tips for Parents Who Have a Child Who is Struggling with Failure To Launch

  

It's normal for parents to want their children to succeed in life. But when a young adult struggles with failure to launch, it can be difficult for parents to know how to react. 

  

Here are some tips for how to support your young adult when they struggle with failure to launch: 

  

1. Be understanding and patient. It can be difficult for a young adult to deal with the disappointment of not meeting their own expectations or their parent's expectations. Be understanding and try to see things from their perspective. 

  

2. Encourage them to keep trying. Failure is a part of life and it's important that your young adult knows that it's okay to fail. Encourage them to keep trying and remind them that you're there for them no matter what happens. 

  

3. Help them develop a plan. If your young adult is struggling with failure to launch, it may be helpful for you to help them develop a plan. This could involve setting goals, finding mentors, or taking courses. Having a plan can give your young adult a sense of purpose and direction. 

  

4. Offer emotional support. Your young adult may need emotional support as they deal with their failures. Be available to listen and offer encouragement when needed. But also respect their privacy and space if they don't want to talk about it.

6. Allow Natural Consequences. Don’t enable your child's bad behavior. If they're not taking responsibility for their own life, it's okay to let them suffer the consequences. This may be tough to do, but it will ultimately teach them the importance of making good choices and being accountable for their actions. 

7. Release Expectations. As parents, we want to help them get back on track and find success. Sometimes we have ideas of who they will become or our definition of “success” that we hold on to. However, sometimes the best thing we can do is step back and let them experience their own life journey.
