Vocational Coaching focuses on helping individuals with job-related goals. This type of coaching is helpful when someone hasn’t worked yet, hasn’t worked in a long time, or is having difficulty getting themselves back to gainful employment.
What is Supported Employment?
Supported employment is a specialized approach to vocational counseling to help individuals who have more significant barriers due to mental health conditions or other disabilities find employment and meaningful work. This approach focuses on providing individualized support to both the employee and support to the employer to ensure a successful employment experience.
What are some of the things that Vocational Counseling or the Supported Employment process can help with?
Career Exploration: Assisting clients in identifying their strengths, interests, values, and skills to help them explore potential vocational paths that align with their personal and professional goals.
Goal Setting: Helping clients set clear, achievable career goals. This includes short-term objectives, such as securing a job, and long-term aspirations, like advancing in a current role or transitioning to a new field.
Job Search Strategies: Providing guidance and support for follow through on effective job searching techniques, including how to find job opportunities and how to network.
Resume and Cover Letter Writing: Offering support in crafting tailored resumes and cover letters that highlight clients’ skills and experiences.
Interview Preparation: Coaching clients on how to prepare for interviews, including common questions, effective responses, and strategies to present themselves appropriately for the work environment.
Skill Development: Identifying and addressing any skills gaps that may be hindering career progress. This could involve supporting training or educational opportunities to acquire new skills.
Job Placement: Identifying job opportunities that match the individual’s skills, interests, and goals. This often involves working closely with local employers to find positions that are a good fit and might include customized roles or job modifications.
Pre-Employment Volunteering: Our team often go with clients to volunteer positions to assess job skills in real time and be able to offer feedback that can be used to grow and change.
On-the-Job Training: Providing training and support directly at the workplace to help the individual learn their job responsibilities and adapt to the work environment.
Ongoing Support: Offering continuous assistance to address any challenges or issues that arise on the job. This can involve regular check-ins, problem-solving support, and adjustments to the job role if necessary.
Employer Support: Working with employers to help them understand and accommodate the needs of the employee. This might include training for supervisors and coworkers, making workplace adjustments, and fostering an inclusive work environment.
Advocacy: Advocating for the individual’s needs and rights within the workplace, ensuring that they receive fair treatment and access to necessary accommodations.
Transition Services: Assisting individuals with transitions such as moving to new job roles, changing employers, or advancing in their careers, while continuing to provide the needed support.
Job Retention: Supporting individuals in maintaining their employment over time by addressing any issues that may arise and helping them adapt to changes in their job or work environment.
Receiving workplace accommodations: A workplace accommodation refers to adjustments or modifications made to a work environment or job role to enable employees with disabilities or special needs to perform their job duties effectively. The goal is to provide equal opportunities and ensure that individuals with disabilities can work on an equal footing with their colleagues.
